A tableware collection that combines the practicality of commercial use with soft, inviting forms that enhance the dining experience.
FUWARI is a collection of commercial tableware made from SPS resin, designed for a wide range of foodservice environments, including corporate cafeterias, hotels, and restaurants.
Commercial tableware must be durable enough to withstand repeated daily use, while also offering efficient stacking and storage for handling large quantities. At the same time, tableware plays an important role in presenting food and enriching the dining experience. This project explores how the lightweight and durable properties of SPS resin can be combined with soft, approachable forms, balancing the practical demands of commercial use with the qualities that make dining more enjoyable.
The design features generously rounded forms, developed to achieve as much softness as possible while maintaining excellent stackability. The gently curved surfaces frame and enhance the food, while thin, refined rims and neatly defined foot rings create a light yet composed appearance. The understated design complements a wide variety of cuisines, from Japanese to Western dishes, while also considering ease of use with different utensils, including chopsticks, spoons, and forks.
For the rice bowls and small bowls, particular attention was given to how food appears when served. By reducing the taper of the sidewalls, the visible surface area of the food is increased without changing the overall diameter. Raising the interior base also positions the food higher, making portions appear more generous even when viewed from an angle. The main plates feature gently rising curves that create a balanced space around the food, enhancing its presentation.
The rice bowls feature narrow, raised foot rings that provide a natural place for the fingers when lifting them from the table, with careful consideration given to the gestures and movements involved in dining.
The thickness of the resin at the base is carefully adjusted to improve weight distribution, balancing ease of handling with stability. All pieces are designed to stack securely on their foot rings, supporting efficient storage, serving, and clearing in busy foodservice environments.
FUWARI brings together the practical requirements of commercial tableware with thoughtful details that enhance food presentation and create a light, comfortable feeling in the hand. Its softly rounded forms are designed to provide a pleasant experience for both those who serve food and those who enjoy it.
The name “FUWARI” comes from a Japanese mimetic expression that evokes a sense of softness, lightness, and gentle movement, reflecting the collection’s softly rounded forms and lightweight feel.
